Vehicle to Vehicle registration number transfers
The only type of transfer at one time and still the only way to transfer
registration numbers between N.Ireland and the mainland and vice-versa .
The Transfer fee is £80 and the form you require is V317. Applications
usually take around 10 working days although you will have to wait a
little longer for the new log books (V5C) to arrive. Transfers to and
from N.Ireland take quite a bit longer as there are two authorities
involved ( DVLA and DVLNI .Applications should be made at your local
Vehicle Registration Office. If the donor vehicle is more than 15 years
old the local office will want to inspect the vehicle. Both
vehicles should be taxed and tested although you may still be able to
transfer the number if the tax expired ( and SORN declared) less than 6
months ago check with your local office. There used to be restrictions
on transfers between cars and bikes but these are now removed. The donor
vehicle must be of a type that requires an M.O.T so farm tractors etc
are out. If you are trading your car in at a garage they can
usually arrange this transfer for you before you pick up the new car. If
you intend to sell your old car privately ,it is advisable to put the
number on retention before you advertise the car
for sale and then any pictures will have the correct registration number
and you can let the car and V5C go as soon as you have a sale.
