What are the factors affecting the value of cherished numbers
and personalised number plates
Ageless numbers values are determined by the number of digits ( usually
the less the better ), the numbers ( repeating numbers or consecutive
are much better than random ), whether the letters first or numbers
first , the actual letters themselves ( some letters are much more
popular initials than others ), the year of issue ( usually the older
the better ) , the area of the country of issue (some parts had very few
cars e.g Scottish Islands ), whether the letter combination was issued
twice (first letters first , second numbers first ), whether the letters
spell a name (e.g. VAL or JOE ). It is more unusual for an ageless
number to spell names etc, this is much more common in prefix , suffix
and newstyle. Market forces also have a big effect ,e.g. how many
similar numbers on the market? is it a combination that always sells
quickly ? Do they regularly auction similar numbers?
Suffix numbers have been a good investment over the last few years as
you rarely see a car with a suffix registration on the road that isn't a
personalised number plate. Suffix registration numbers have become the
poor man's ageless cherished number as it will be obvious that it is not
the original registration number for that car . Some of the shorter ones
are very attractive and can easily suggest names e.g. MOL 9P for Molly?
Some combinations are priced almost as ageless numbers due to the
combination of letters being so difficult to obtain and excessive demand
e.g. JSM 7P is pretty valuable because ageless JSM numbers are as rare
as hen's teeth !
Prefix number values have the biggest variations , some are not even
worth what the owner paid for them whilst others have risen in value by
several times over. Originally the low cost option to obtain a
personalised number plate as many were kept back and not issued
specifically to be sold at a later date. Prefix numbers can spell some
names quite well e.g. L33 ANA for Leana etc. Of course any that contain
a name such as SUE or LYN have increased in value many times over.
Newstyle numbers have not proven to be as popular as the prefix unissued
registration numbers due to them always having 7 digits, the layout of
the number ( If the three letters were at the beginning more name plates
would have sold for sure ) .There are some exceptions however such as
DR51 NGH for Dr Singh. Unlike ageless, suffix and prefix registration
numbers, the chances of you having a normal issue number on your car
that is worth anything is approximately zero as any good ones have been
kept back to sell.
