Prefix Registration NumbersIntroduced in 1983 when the suffix number system was exhausted , it is basically a reversal of the suffix system in that the year identifying letter comes first ( Q,Z,U and I were never used ), instead of last, then 1 , 2 or 3 numbers then 3 letters.
Examples of prefix numbers could be :- A1 AEF Y101 NNL
You may notice that towards the end ( 1998 ) the year letter was changed every 6 months, this was to use up the prefix letters so the new style registrations could start in 2001.
