There are various rules governing the appearance etc of the physical number plates affixed to the vehicle , here will cover the major regulations.

Current regulations state that number plates should be affixed to the front and rear and should be easy to read and meet British Standard BS Au 145d.Both plates should have reflective backgrounds ( white for front and yellow for rear ) letters should be non-reflective. Number plates made after Sep 2001 should have characters of 14mm stroke , 79mm high and 50mm wide. Spaces between characters must be 11mm and the space in the middle separating the two blocks of characters should be 33mm.Top , bottom and side margins should be a minimum of 11mm.There is only one font allowable ( no italics etc ) :-

Europlates are optional and you can have a choice of flags...St Georges Cross, Saltire, Red Dragon. All plates must carry the name and postcode of whoever made up the plates. Characters should not be moved around the plates bolts etc should not be used to try to change the appearance of the characters. Failure to comply can result in M.O.T failure, fine up to £1000 and confiscation of the registration number with recompense.
