Ageless Registration Numbers As the name suggests these registration numbers have no age identifier contained within them British numbers can have 1 2 or 3 letters and 1 2, 3 or 4 numbers. Each registration number will have a maximum of six digits so if you have 3 letters you can't have 4 numbers. Northern Ireland numbers can have 3 letters and 4 numbers but one of the letters must be a Z or I .Conversely British ageless numbers would never have the letter Z or I. Examples of ageless british numbers:- A 1 BB 1 ABC 1 BB 4490 4490 BB and the most common ( called a 3 plus 3 ) ABC 123 123 ABC Note that sometimes the letters are first and sometimes the numbers are first, generally speaking letters first is more desirable ( as we read left to right ) they will be older and therefore rarer and inevitably more expensive. This system was superseded by the suffix system in 1963 when combinations were running out due to the increasing number of new cars being registered. Note also that the letters MN and *MN were always used for the Isle of Man and are therefore not available here. Examples of N.Ireland numbers :- SZ 1 65 PZ KAZ 5432 This system is still in use n N.Ireland. It is possible to ascertain the area of origin of the registration number from the 2nd and 3rd letter, to see a table detailing this click the link below
